Self Help: The Secret to Enjoying Work
This week's self-help question: Lisa, at work I feel inadequate and
second-guess myself.
Despite being told in my performance reviews
that I am a very valued employee,
I don't feel any better.
What can I do to overcome this barrier?
A. Freedom from the fear of failure has many names:
the zone, mental toughness, the zen moment.
I suspect there are times at work when you are free
of your fear...times when you are neither self-seeking
nor self-conscious.
Instead, you are fully responding to what your clients,
boss, or colleagues require of you.
You are one with the flow of the work,
one with what you are doing, one with the now.
In these moments, you are an inspiration to everyone
you come in contact with.
You relax them and allow them to be themselves.
You are not constantly seeking praise from others
or blaming those who do not recognize you.
You are not motivated solely by power or profit,
where work is a means to an end.
The task itself is its own joy.
This is the mental toughness mindset you desire
at work.
Re-training Your Mind
Getting in the zone sounds simple, and it is.
Simple...but not easy.
Freeing yourself from the fear of failure
means re-training your mind.
Exceptional performers understand how to be present
while working.
This is why the Dahlai Lama is so peaceful.
Since the age of 6, he's been training his mind
towards enlightenment.
You can do the same.
Mental Toughness Exercise for Self-Help
The greater part of your fearful thinking at work
is involuntary and automatic.
The next time you go to work, take a pocket notebook.
Work as you normally do, only this time listen
to your mind each time it pays attention to your ego
(the part of you that wants recognition) instead
of what you are doing.
Here are some typical thoughts you might have:
- Now I've done it. I'm going to get exposed
for my lack of knowledge.
- I really messed up this client file.
- Why am I so slow today? What's taking so long?
- My boss really prefers the new girl, probably
because she's so smart
- I'm so overqualified for this. Why am I in
such a dead-end job?
- Why don't I get more support around here?
Don't attempt to stop your mind; simply listen in.
When you hear your mind move its attention to
the opinion of others, your results, or your self-image,
write it down.
Writing it down makes you objective about this
part of your mind.
If you take this part of yourself seriously
and you buy into what your mind is saying,
your fear will be exaggerated.
When you shine the light of consciousness upon this part
of yourself, it cannot help but wither.
As you learn to focus more on your tasks
and less on yourself, the joy of work with shine through...
and you will become truly extraordinary at work.
I'll talk to you again soon.
Your friend,
Lisa B.
