Self
Help: The Art of Compassion
The one area we must win in is
relationships. Above all else, what we are really seeking is love.
One
of the most important elements of love is compassion, which is the desire
to alleviate the suffering of another.
Compassion
springs from empathy, which is the ability to imagine--with feeling-- the
trials and tribulations of others.
Often,
the best way to understand a concept is to grasp its opposite. Here are
actions that indicate lack of empathy:
- Inappropriate selfishness:
not considering others' preferences regarding leisure activities,
meals, child-rearing, etc.
- Criticizing. Criticism
hurts other people deeply, especially when done in public.
- Discrimination. All forms
of racism and bigotry are a sign of extreme lack of empathy.
- Self-absorption: the inability
to give others the spotlight in conversation and listen to them.
- Yelling, name-calling, and
making hurtful comments or jokes that cause others shame.
- Forgetting to compliment
others for their efforts and unique qualities.
- Neglecting to celebrate the
achievements of others, including special milestones such as
birthdays, weddings, retirements, etc.
- Neglecting to nurture to
people when they experience stressful events such as health, job or
relationship problems.
- Breaking promises or
violating expectations at work or home.
